The ancient city of Ephesus is a prominent example of a Roman port city, with a sea channel and a port basin. It was the Hellenic capital of Greece and was the capital of the province of Asia of the Roman Empire. Ephesus was a very important city economically, geographically, politically and culturally. Many classical philosophers read today, such as Heraclitus, lived in the scientific, cultural and artistic field of the city of Ephesus.
After entering the Magnesia Gate we start a slow descent down the hill with our guide. The route takes us to The Odeon (concert venue), the baths of Varius (used as a gymnasium), Prytaneion (administrative offices where religious ceremonies, official receptions and banquets were also held), Agora (Ephesus commercial market), the temple of Hadrian (dedicated to Emperor Hadrian, Artemis and the people of Ephesus), the Trajan’s fountain (built in honor of Emperor Trajan) and the Grand Theater. The theater had seating for 24,000 people and was the site where St. Paul is believed to have preached to the Ephesians and is used today for a local spring festival.
Library of Celsus, is the most distinctive building and one of the most photographed structures that is commonly associated with Ephesus. It was erected by Tiberius Julius Eagle Polemeanus (son of Tiberius Julius Celsopolemeanus). It is estimated that the construction was completed in 117 A.D. It is made in a very good marble with figures of Eros, Nike and garlands in relief.
House of the Virgin Mary. It is near the top of Bülbül Mountain, one of the hills overlooking Selçuk. After the death of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary went to Ephesus with John, where she lived until her death, at the age of 101. This church is an important pilgrimage center for Christians and is declared sacred. There is also a spring that is believed to be healing. Popes Paul VI and John Paul II visited this house.
The Temple of Artemis: at one time it was the largest in the world, eclipsing even the Parthenon in Athens, and thus gaining a place in the list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only one of its original 127 columns remains to this day, often surmounted by a stork’s nest; a poignant testament to nature’s transition and human achievement. It is still a charming and quiet place where the huge pillar gives an idea of the vast size of the temple.
